
Les Misérables also known as Les Mis is a musical by Claude Michel Schonberg composed in 1980. The original production of Les Mis was written in French and debuted in the Paris Sports Arena. In 1982 Cameron Mackintosh received a copy of the French album from director Peter Farago. Farago liked Mackintosh's work and chose him to produce a English version Les Misérables. Eventually Mackintosh agreed and two years later the show opened in London.
In 1985 the English version was produced by Herbert Kretzmer. The English production of Les Misérables debuted at the Barbican Centre in London on October 8th, 1985. The initial reviews were scrutinized by scholars for converting classic literature into a musical. However the public had different feelings. The Les Mis box office received a record number of orders and sold out every show.
On March 12th, 1987 the Broadway production Les Misérables opened and ran until May 18th, 2003. During Les Mis's 16 year stent on Broadway it had over 6,600 performances and is the third longest running Broadway show in Broadway history. Since the musical has opened Les Misérables has had over 35 successful international tours and won eight Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score.
